Neutral hues and red shoes.

Just because summer's come to an end doesn't mean one of my favorite summer trends has -- colorblocking is definitely still on point, and that makes me oh so happy. This past weekend, sunshine-filled as it was, seemed like a perfect day to don an outfit that recalled summer, but with an added layer or two to protect against that autumn bite!

Now, don't get me wrong -- I love me some neutrals. But having too many of them in a single outfit can end up looking, well, bland. So I tried to livened up this salmon pink dress and cropped trench with a pretty red belt and some killer (Seriously, they killed my feet. Word of advice: if you're going to try wearing heels this sky-high, make sure they're from a quality company. Charlotte Russe just doesn't cut it!) red platform slingbacks.

Trench, H&M (similar here); Dress, ASOS Petite Size 2; Shoes, Charlotte Russe Size 6 (similar here); Bag, Badgley Mischka; Watch, Michael Kors Mini-Runway; Jewelry, thrifted.
Although I've raved about my love for ASOS Petite before, I can't say it enough - it's just so rare to find a petite-friendly line that hasn't totally succumbed to vanity sizing. ASOS Petite really does run small, and it fits off-the-rack. Admittedly, this may not be true for all their items (the Petite Tailored Pencil Sheath Dress that fits Jean of ExtraPetite so wonderfully didn't work for me at all), I've had a lot of luck with their items overall.

And of course, as my mom likes to say, the devil is in the details. So I went ahead and accessorized the outfit with some bright burnt orange-red bracelets - I think these really helped to pull together the outfit, as does the rich mahogany leather of the bag.

I really like the subtle red checked detailing on the inside of this coat. It stops it from looking too dull, and since it's sort of a swing trench, it peeks through when you wear the jacket unbuttoned.

To mix it up a little, I also tried pairing this dress with some chambray -- I'm a little ambivalent about how it turned out, possibly it's just too summery and pastel for my liking. I do like how the the chambray really make the red accessories pop, though!

Chambray button-up, (similar here).
But what do you think? Does this color combo work, or just crash and burn?

  3. I fell in love with the color of this dress instantly -- it's both a blessing and a curse that ASOS has so many items in this exact shade, because it's so tempting to buy them all! Too bad my budget can't accommodate that sort of thing!

  4. Thank you! I feel like shoes that dramatic definitely need toned down hues to ground the outfit, or it just ends up being too much.
